Charlotte Observer: Belk Family Changed My Life in a Big Way

Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Arts CenterDavidson student Matt Gore '16 pens a response to the Sept. 4 Charlotte Observer article "4 ways the Belks shaped Charlotte," which highlighted the far-reaching impact of the Belk family on the health, economy and culture of the Charlotte region. In his letter to the editor, Gore, a Belk Scholar and double major, offers his personal experience as testament to the power of one family's generosity.

The Belk family has made an indelible mark on the lives of Davidson students with the John Montgomery Belk ('43) Scholarship, one of the nation's most prestigious and generous undergraduate scholarships, and the Thomas M. Belk College Chaplaincy, as well as on the campus itself with campus sculptures and state-of-the-art facilities, including the Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Arts Center, W.H. Belk Hall, Mary Irwin Belk Hall, Irwin Belk Track and Carol Grotnes Belk Turf field.
