Offered over winter break, our Job Shadowing Program provides one and multi-day shadowing experiences that allow students to spend time with an alumni or parent volunteer at work. Through observation and conversation, participating students have the opportunity to learn more about a profession, receive career-related advice, and reflect on the ways in which their liberal arts education can prepare them for life after Davidson.
Host Registration Period: Monday, Sept. 2, 2013 - Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013
Student Application Period: Monday, Oct. 28, 2013 - Monday, Nov. 11, 2013
Shadowing Dates: Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 - Friday, Jan. 10, 2014
We had over 260 hosts register for last year's program, with 110 students completing 150 shadowing experiences.
Hosts are expected to introduce their profession, industry and/or organization; provide a tour of the workplace; answer questions; and most importantly, allow a student to observe their daily routine. Some hosts choose to arrange meetings or informational interviews between the student and other professionals; others engage the student in a project.
Students are responsible for transporting themselves to and from the job shadowing site, locating and paying for any necessary lodging, researching the organization in advance of the shadowing day, and coming prepared with questions.
The specific shadowing date(s) will be decided upon by the student and host after the selection process is complete.
New hosts should fill out our Job Shadowing Host Form. Any hosts that participated last year and would like to participate again this year with the same employer may contact Ashley Neff. She can send you your application from last year and request updates so that you do not have to fill out the form again. The Center for Career Development will contact all hosts in November to confirm their participation.
Students can apply for specific job shadowing experiences between Oct. 28 and Nov. 11 in WildcatLink by clicking on the "Jobs" tab and selecting "Job Shadowing." To apply, students will submit a resume and a brief letter to individual shadowing hosts describing why they are interested in that opportunity. Each student can apply for up to four shadowing experiences.
In November, the Center for Career Development will send all hosts a packet of applications from students interested in their shadowing experience. If only one student applies for a particular experience and the host accepts that student, the student will be notified and put in contact with the host to schedule a specific shadowing date. If more than one student applies for an experience, the host will determine how many and which students he or she is willing to take. This process will take place between Nov. 11 and Nov. 26. Our goal is to have the majority of shadowing placements confirmed by Thanksgiving break.
If you have questions about the job shadowing program, please contact Ashley Neff . If you are interested in an opportunity and would like some help with your resume or letter of interest, contact the Center for Career Development, or stop by during walk-in hours (M-F, 1:30-3:30 p.m.) for assistance from a career adviser.
