Continuing Review (Renewal)

A non-exempt project approval covers one year. Therefore, should a project extend past one year, a continuing review (renewal) application must be submitted and approved by the IRB before the end of the approval period. If there is a lapse between the end of the approval period and the submission of the renewal request, a new protocol application must be submitted rather than a renewal.

A Continuing Review (Renewal) application submission must include the following:

  1. A Request for Modification/Continuing Review (Renewal) of IRB Approved Human Subject Research form with the applicable information completed.
  2. The approved non-exempt application form (DOC) along with all supporting documentation (i.e., consent forms, questionnaires, recruiting materials, etc.) must be updated and submitted, listing any changes on the Request for Modification/Continuing Review (Renewal) of IRB Approved Human Subject Research form.
  3. Training certification documentation must be attached to the renewal submission or "on file" must be checked on the form, for all personnel, including, if applicable, any new investigators being added regardless of their institutional affiliation.
  4. The Request for Modification/Continuing Review (Renewal) of IRB Approved Human Subject Research form must be signed, with the name and date typed in the Investigator's Assurance block on the last page of the form, and emailed to hsirb@davidson.edu.

The Davidson IRB typically uses a primary reviewer to review all renewal requests. After a favorable review, an email approval of the renewal is emailed to the investigator (and copied to the faculty sponsor, if applicable).
