The Reverend Dr. John Bachman had a prominent role in the life of the South Carolina Synod for over 40 years.
  • Early education from Lutheran ministers
  • Studied theology under Pastor P. F. Mayer of Philadelphia
  • He was largely instrumental in founding our Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary
  • Chief mover in establishment of Newberry College
  • First Chairman of the Newberry College Board of Trustees. Newberry
  • Principal mover in originating the South Carolina Synod.
  • An outstanding naturalist
  • Elected President of Synod, 1824-1833, 1839-1840
  • President of General Synod, 1863, served 2 terms
  • Died 1874
  • Buried at St. John's Charleston, South Carolina, in center aisle in front of the chancel.
