Much Ado Catering for Davidson College Events


Much Ado Davidson Catering Group offers full catering services for Davidson College sponsored events. Much Ado is a part of Dining Services.


This document seeks to inform college departments of the policies governing Much Ado's services as well as procedures for placing a catering order.


College departments should place catering orders as early as possible with advance notice of at least five working days. Pickup and delivery orders may be placed with three days working notice.

All catering orders require a final guest count three full working days prior to the event. This number is not subject to reduction and any increases must be approved.

Cancellation of a catering order three or more working days before an event will result in charges for direct expenses incurred (i.e., menu items already purchased for your event, rented equipment, or floral arrangements).

Cancellation of catering order less than three working days before an event requires payment of the estimated final charge on the most current Banquet Event Order.

Standard final billing will be based on the guest count submitted three full working days prior to the event plus any additions made within the seventy-two hours prior to the event. Billing invoices are sent out at the end of the month to the college department and will reflect all actual charges rather than the estimated charges listed on the confirmed contract.

Much Ado will provide the following services:

  • Supply the ordered menu items to any campus location on or thirty minutes prior to the set delivery time,
  • Remove all items remaining after the event at the designated pickup time,
  • Provide table coverings per table necessary for the food and beverage orders
  • Provide the appropriate paper/plastic products and disposable utensils for the menu.

Delivery charges vary and are based on the complexity and timing of the delivery. Thus, all delivery fees indicated on the Banquet Event Order are estimates only. Additional charges may apply for delivery complications such as locked doors, meetings running late, etc. The college department is responsible for all facility access needs.

Events shall be staffed according to the following:

  • 1 manager
  • 1-2 kitchen attendants (mandatory for all meals and large receptions)
  • 1 uniformed attendant per 25 guests at receptions
  • 1-2 uniformed attendants per food station/buffet table (optional with some stations)
  • 1 uniformed attendant per 16 guests at meals
  • 1 attendant per 50 guests at any bar (four hour minimum service time)

Much Ado-Davidson Catering Group is fully permitted for alcohol service and complies with all North Carolina ABC Guidelines. Much Ado Davidson Catering Group is required to administer all alcoholic beverages on campus. Any alcohol service not handled by Much Ado must be approved by the Dean of Students office and/or the Director of Auxiliary Services. Open alcoholic beverages may not be taken from an event, and personal alcohol may not be brought into an event where Much Ado is catering.

Much Ado Bartenders are required to card guests they perceive to be under age and are required to discontinue service to guests they feel are in jeopardy of harm to themselves or a liability to the college. Cash bar service is only permitted in the Lilly Gallery, Vail Commons, and the Union 900 Room. Much Ado Davidson Catering Group shall be compliant with all state Health Department and Serve Safe regulations. Food not prepared by Much Ado is not permitted unless approved by management. No food may be taken from any event under any circumstances. To-Go containers will not be provided.

Administration of Policy

The Director of Dining Services shall oversee this policy and review it at least once every two years. Changes to this policy shall be made in accordance with the college's Policy on Policies.

Placing an Order

Orders may be placed by phone, email, or by using the EMS reservation system. Orders are processed Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.. Orders received after 4:30 p.m. are dated the next business day. Orders should be placed as early as possible. Providing less than five days notice may limit the options available or make accommodating all or a portion of your request impossible. Friday and weekend event orders should be placed by Wednesday of the week prior. Friday and weekend drop-off orders should be placed by Tuesday.


The event planner is responsible for:

  1. Having the delivery site ready thirty (30) minutes prior to the designated drop-off time.
  2. Proper care of all Much Ado equipment used during event.
  3. Damaged or unreturned equipment. Any damaged or unreturned equipment will be billed at replacement value.
  4. Deliveries may include drop-off only or drop-off with a setup and return trips to pickup and breakdown. Each trip is charged separately per staff required for the job. A minimum payment of $15 for on campus deliveries and $30 for off campus deliveries is required. For unique delivery needs, additional fees may apply.


Staffing off events shall be in accordance with the policy identified above. All staff are charged to the customer at $15.50 per staff per hour that the individual is in service or waiting to complete service. All Banquet Event Orders/contracts will have a service charge/labor estimate that is determined by the overall event profile, but will begin at a standard 35% of food and beverage sales unless that is not sufficient for the type of service requested. All alcohol service must be provided by Much Ado staff or bartender for Davidson College sponsored events on or off campus.


Room set-up arrangements and other equipment for an event is best arranged through the Much Ado Office. Customers may, however, make their own arrangements through EMS or by contacting the Physical Plant Department by calling 704-894-2595. Any customer directly coordinating with the Physical Plant shall forward Much Ado all arrangements.

Complimentary linen is provided for all seated meals. Break orders will receive coverings as needed for the food and beverage tables only. Limited additional linen can be provided in some cases, for a rental fee. The quantity and available colors and sizes are determined by our total operational need. There are no refunds or adjustments for unused linens. Used and unused linens should be returned to Much Ado.
