Substantive Change Policy

Substantive Change for SACSCOC Accredited Institutions (SACSCOC = Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges) requires every accredited institution to specify and follow a policy regarding substantive change at the institution. Substantive change "is a significant modification or expansion in the nature or scope of an accredited institution." Since the last decennial report, Davidson College has not made such a substantive change and therefore has not reported such change to SACSCOC.

The policy commits Davidson to complying with the SACSCOC policy and procedures on substantive change, and creates a procedure at Davidson for complying with those procedures and policy.

Davidson College is committed to maintaining compliance with the substantive change policy and procedures of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as delineated in Substantive Change for Accredited Institutions of the Commission of Colleges. Davidson recognizes the responsibility of the Commission on Colleges to review substantive changes that occur between decennial reviews. The college will notify the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges of significant modification or expansion of the nature and scope of the college and, when required, seek approval prior to the initiation of changes. If unclear as to whether a change is substantive in nature, the college will consult with commission staff.

Administration of Policy

The college's reaccreditation liaison, in consultation with the college President and senior leadership, holds the responsibility for identifying any substantive change, informing the commission about the change, and seeking commission approval of the change.

The President's Executive Staff (PES) should review this policy once every five years, during the year preceding the college's five-year or ten-year report to SACSCOC.

This policy is also subject to the college's Policy on Policies.

The policy is available in the Faculty Handbook and the Employee Handbook, as well as in the Policy Library on Inside Davidson.
