Health Services

After Hours Registered Nurse

A Registered Nurse is on call to speak with students after hours Monday – Friday from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. and 24 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday.

To speak with a nurse, call 704-894-2300, and press 1. If it is determined that a student needs to be seen by a healthcare provider during a time that the Center for Student Health and Well-Being is not open, the student will be referred to a community medical center or ER. If an appointment in the Center for Student Health and Well-Being needs to be made, the student will be instructed to call back during normal business hours between 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

A counselor also remains on-call after hours. For severe cases and services outside the scope of those offered at the Center for Student Health and Well-Being, there are multiple hospitals and urgent care facilities nearby.

To Speak to the Nurse On-Call

  • Call 704-894-2300 and press 1. This will connect you to the nurse on call.
  • The call will be answered by an attendant who will obtain the necessary information for an RN to call you back.
  • Sometimes the wait time will be longer if the call volume has been high. If you have not heard back within 30-45 minutes, please call back.
  • The after hours number is only active when the Center for Student Health and Well-Being is closed. If you need to speak with someone during regular hours, call the main number, 704-894-2300.
  • A nurse remains on-call during most breaks except for winter and summer break.

Urgent Health Needs After-Hours

If you have an obvious broken bone or laceration that needs stitches, you will be referred to a local urgent care facility or hospital. The nurse on-call can triage other injuries by phone and refer you to a local pharmacy where you can purchase crutches, ice packs, ace bandages, and other symptomatic treatments until you can see a Center for Student Health and Well-Being physician.

If you are in severe distress, such as an acute asthma attack or allergic reaction with breathing difficulty, you must be evaluated at a hospital and likely transported via medic. You should not wait for the on-call nurse, as such situations escalate quickly. Instead, call 911 or go to an emergency facility (see the list below).

Counseling Services

After Hours Emergency Counseling Services

If you are experiencing a psychological emergency during regular center office hours (8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday) a staff member at the center will see you that same day. If you experience an emergency after 5 p.m. on a weekday or over the weekend, you can reach the center’s emergency/crisis line by dialing 704-894-2300, and press 2. The emergency line is not active during winter break or summer break.

Any member of the college community, including family members of students, can call the counselor to address a student psychological emergency. Calls are fully confidential, as with all counseling services, with exceptions made only in the case of imminent harm or as required by law.

For reference, crises would include:

  • thoughts about harming or killing yourself
  • thoughts about harming another person
  • recent assault or abuse
  • concern about your own safety
  • hallucinations or mania
  • recent death of a loved one or other significant loss
  • witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event
