Meet The Chaplains

Davidson's chaplaincy addresses a broad range of spiritual needs and fosters all manner of religious expression and inquiry at the college. The chaplains are available to all members of the college community from any religious tradition or secular background, for pastoral counseling, spiritual direction, and program planning. The Chaplain's Office is located on the fourth floor of the Alvarez College Union, next to the elevator.

Rob Spach

Rob Spach is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). A graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, he came to Davidson as Chaplain in 1993. His interests include the practice of centering prayer, the history of Christian thought, and wisdom traditions of various world religions. He is married and has two grown children.

Karen Soos holds a Masters of Divinity degree from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. She loves liturgy and is excited about helping people discover their gifts and use those gifts in the service of neighbor, church and world.

Michael Shields

Michael Shields serves as the rabbi of the Temple Kol Tikvah (Reform) in Davidson. He received his M.A. in Hebrew Literature, M.A. in Religious Education, and Rabbinical Ordination at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion. His interests include social action, connecting Judaism with the outdoors, music, and the search for meaning in the modern world.

Elizabeth Welliver

Elizabeth Welliver graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Religion in May 2016.  Previously, she attended Pearson United World College in British Columbia. She enjoys working in the community to connect faith, the arts, and peacemaking. She hopes to attend seminary and pursue interfaith work with the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Linda Gurley is a native of Davidson and has been with the college since 1987. She has worked in the Chaplain's Office for more than 20 years.
