Backcountry Odyssey Registration

The Backcountry Odyssey is open to incoming first-year students at Davidson (including transfers). Register Now.

  • Due to the program's popularity and limited space, register early.
  • Spaces are generally filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • All incoming first-year students will receive a program brochure about the Service and Backcountry Odyssey with a link to an Odyssey landing page with this year's dates.


Once you submit your registration online, we will send links for the Travel Plans and the Personal Information and Gear Request forms particular to your trip.

  • Session II: Saturday, July 30 - Wednesday, Aug. 3
  • Session III: Wednesday, Aug. 10 - Wednesday, Aug. 17
  • Session III International/STRIDE: Wednesday, Aug. 10 - Sunday, Aug. 14

Cost & Payment Options


  • Session I: $200

  • Session III International/STRIDE: $200
    • Geared towards students participating in STRIDE, International, or some other pre-orientation program that begins on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 14

Payment Options
Once we have determined which session fits, we will bill your Davidson College account. Our plan is to post that bill on the first day of your session. By registering, you commit to pay that bill when it is posted. We will email you to remind you of the payment due as it approaches.

Financial Aid

  • Financial aid is available to those students who have already qualified for aid from Davidson
  • Awards will be based on the level of need as assessed by the Office of Financial Aid and will be distributed by Davidson Outdoors
  • If you are interested in receiving aid for the Backcountry Odyssey and you have already qualified for aid from Davidson, please indicate this in the appropriate area on the registration form
  • You will be notified of the amount of your award in your confirmation packet


When we have received your online registration and added you to a session we will send you a confirmation email that will include links to two more online forms and information about your payment posting date and amount. Information about the program, personal gear and clothing checklists, a medical screening form, a liability release, and a checklist is included in the Forms section above. Once you know what session you are in, feel free to download those forms.


If you cancel 23 days or more prior to the start of your session you will not be billed for the Backcountry Odyssey. We will bill you 50 percent of the session fee for cancellations from 22 to 9 days prior to the start of your session. We will bill you the full session fee for cancellations made less than 9 days prior to the start of your session.


You must bring your own shoes and clothing. Davidson Outdoors can provide you with a sleeping bag and pad if you cannot bring your own. We also provide backpacking, canoeing, climbing, and mountain biking gear. A complete list of necessary equipment and clothing is included in the Forms section above.
