At some point last summer, a water leak began to develop in the exterior line at the house. For the first few months after returning to Davidson we suspected the leak but could find no physical evidence of its existence. We were pretty sure it wasn't inside anywhere, hoping and assuming that we'd be able to hear the water in a drain somewhere if it were inside. We were confused, however, since the water usage was beginning to skyrocket and yet we could find no moisture in the ground anywhere on our property. The only thing that kepts us above water (sorry about that one...) was the fact that we began cutting off the water to the house at the valve by the street.

We called the water company to come and make sure the meter was working properly, and they found no errors. We then called a plumber to come out and take a look, and his estimate was $500 to find the leak and another $500 to fix it. Such a bill was obviously beyond our means, so we took matters into our own hands. We began digging up the yard, creating a trench which followed the water line from the meter to the house. When we turned the water on the leak became apparent as a fine mist spraying from a point in the hose. It's amazing to consider how many thousands of gallons of water came out of that tiny hole.

With the aid of local resident Bob Schwartz and recent Davidson graduate Greg Filak we purchased some new piping and repaired the line. Total cost: a bit under $10. Total savings from estimated cost: a bit over $990.

Thanks to everyone who helped, and thanks to all of the grads out there who offered advice!
