Getting Involved

The Duke Endowment Difference

In October 2012, The Duke Endowment committed to the largest gift in Davidson's history: a $45 million grant to transform the academic heart of campus.

At the time of the announcement, President Carol Quillen said: "This gift will help us demonstrate the inestimable value of what highly selective liberal arts colleges do-graduate talented individuals from across the socio-economic spectrum who exert a disproportionate impact for good in the world."

The gift will support a comprehensive construction and renovation plan for six academic buildings as well as the expansion of curricular offerings that will, in sum, reimagine the model of liberal arts education.

The Academic Neighborhood will encourage organic collaboration across disciplines and advance the creation of new knowledge-two of the things that make a Davidson education special.

The Duke Endowment cited support of Davidson, its leadership, faculty and staff, and student body as the reason for the generous, record-breaking gift. Since its founding in 1924, the Endowment has awarded $2.9 billion in grants, and now, with this gift, more than $167 million to Davidson.

How to Get Involved

Creating the Academic Neighborhood will be Davidson's most transformative, and costly, academic facility since the renovation of the venerable Chambers Building. We hope you will be among those alumni, parents and friends whose generosity will fund its construction and be permanently recognized through a naming gift.

The Academic Neighborhood will include a variety of spaces with no precedent on our campus, as it embodies the dynamic and diverse research opportunities which will progress there. You will have an opportunity to provide a forum for public lectures, an arena for ground-breaking research, a technologically sophisticated laboratory, a teaching space where faculty share their expertise or a collaborative learning area where students illuminate each other's insights. We will be pleased to name a space after you, a family member or someone else you would like to honor in this enduring way.

As fundraising for the Academic Neighborhood continues, alumni, parents, and friends are invited to become a part of an exciting journey into the future of liberal arts education at Davidson College.
