Several years ago, when I first appeared on the Alumni Trustee ballot, I wrote about my admiration for “Davidson people.” My experiences working alongside alums and administration on the Alumni Association Board, the Board of Visitors and various other volunteer positions had shown me the depth of friends’ and colleagues’ humanity, both in their treatment of others and in their approaches to difficult problems. These last few years on the Board of Trustees have only served as further proof for me of the thoughtful leadership that guides our beloved College.
I would like to thank the alumni body for giving me the opportunity to serve Davidson in this special way. As a member of the Board, I am fully dedicated to ensuring that Davidson is fulfilling its primary purpose of assisting students to develop humane instincts and prepare them for lives of leadership and service. I currently serve as Chair of the Campus Life and Student Experience Committee and am also a member of the Executive Committee, the Governance and Nominating Committee, and the Campus Strategy, Planning, and Use Committee.
As I write this, we are in the midst of both the Covid-19 pandemic and civil unrest across the country that is shining a spotlight on age-old issues within our system and within ourselves that can no longer be ignored. These turbulent times highlight the importance of continuing to value the guiding principles that have distinguished Davidson from other institutions – the integrity of the honor code and the cultivation of the skill to communicate effectively, especially with those with whom we don’t agree – while also remaining open to the ways in which Davidson must continue to be dynamic and willing to adjust as we evolve and grow. The ground beneath us is shifting and our tomorrows are uncertain. Davidson will continue to educate leaders for lives of impact. They will be the “Davidson people” of the future and the significance of this responsibility cannot be underestimated.
It is a true honor to serve on the Board of Trustees and I look forward to a second term as an Alumni Trustee. With deep gratitude….
