March 25: COVID Update

Message to the Davidson College community from the Core COVID Response Team:

The mask mandate for public, indoor spaces will be lifted at 5 p.m. today. Here’s what that means:

  • You will no longer be required to mask in public, indoor spaces.
  • Masks will still be required in classrooms, unless the professor says otherwise.
  • Divisions that are playing host to visitors on campus, such as admission tours, concerts, plays or athletic events, will determine whether to lift or retain the mask mandate at their events.
  • Masks will still be required in the Center for Student Health and Well-Being and may be required in other offices.
  • Masks will still be required in the Tomlinson Hall conference room COVID testing site.
  • Faculty or staff holding meetings in private offices may require attendees to wear a mask.

If someone asks you to wear a mask in any circumstance, we ask that you respect their request as a member of our community.

We said on Wednesday that this change is not just in the context of the case numbers and positivity rate declining. The guidance and actions by public health organizations and other institutions is toward managing COVID. We are approaching it as another health risk that we face alongside threats such as influenza. Our strongest tools—vaccinations and boosters—have been widely adopted within our community, and we continue to support and empower individual efforts toward protection. We also cannot ignore the mental health effects of masking on young people, and that mask mandates have been lifted in the areas all around us where our community members spend a great deal of their time. It is difficult to see how our mandate continues to have the effectiveness we initially sought.

We caution, as we have throughout the COVID pandemic, that we may make changes in guidelines and policies in the future, including reinstating a mask mandate, based on the level of spread in the community and on campus.

Please reach out to us if you have questions.

March 23: COVID Update

Message to the Davidson College community from the Core COVID Response Team:

We anticipate lifting the mask mandate sometime in the next few days. Here’s what that will mean when it happens:

  • You will no longer be required to mask in public, indoor spaces.
  • Masks will still be required in classrooms, unless the professor says otherwise.
  • Masks will still be required in the Center for Student Health & Well-Being and may be required in other offices.
  • Faculty or staff holding meetings in private offices may require attendees to wear a mask.

We ask that you respect the requests of others in circumstances when they ask you to wear a mask. We make this adjustment, not just in the context of declining positivity rates and cases, but also a shift within public health organizations and other institutions toward managing COVID—approaching it as another health risk that we face alongside threats such as influenza. We are encouraged that our strongest tools—vaccinations and boosters—have been widely adopted within our community, and we continue to support and empower individual efforts of protection. We also cannot ignore the mental health effects of masking on young people, and, given the removal of mask mandates in the areas all around us where our community members spend a great deal of their time, it is difficult to see how our mandate continues to have the effectiveness we initially sought.

We offer the same caution as we have throughout the COVID pandemic that we may make changes in guidelines and policies in the future, including reinstating a mask mandate, based on the level of spread in the community and on campus.

Please reach out to us if you have questions.

Cases

We have no active COVID cases among students.
