How do you eat your Oreos? Cream first? All in one bite? Do you dunk them in milk? On Wednesday the Vail Commons Bakeshop staff members will show there are many options beyond simple dunking and twisting, as Oreos take center stage for this month’s Bakery Showcase.
Executive Chef Craig Mombert planned the Bakery Showcase as a way to spotlight the work of the Bakeshop staff members. The bakers will take turns throughout the year leading and planning recipes for monthly showcases. In August, Baker Pat Aubin planned a cheesecake showcase to kick off the showcase season, and Baker Rebecca Sporney followed with a bread showcase in September. Baker Sarah Coyne will lead planning for the November showcase. The October showcase was a team effort, with all bakers gathering recipes rather than selecting one leader.
"The decision to feature Oreos was a pretty easy one," Coyne said. “We looked at our different spotlights from last year, and our different desserts, and the first to go was always ‘Oreo’ anything,” she said. “Plus, you can do a lot with Oreos.”
And the team certainly demonstrates versatility and creativity, with 11 different Oreo desserts. They include:
That last one—the “Oreo Scoopie”—is a student favorite, Coyne said, which is funny because it’s so simple: just chocolate pudding, Oreo pieces and whipped cream. Other dishes, like the “Salted Caramel Oreo Bar,” are more complex. Much like the bakers’ “Hello Dollies,” which are popular 7-layer dessert bars, the Oreo Bar combines sweet and salty flavors and lots of texture, with an Oreo crust, chocolate chips, pretzels and caramel.
The array of Oreo-inspired treats will be available to all Vail Commons guests Wednesday, Oct. 22, along with its scratch-made entrees, soup, sandwich and grill specials.
