CNN: Artificial Intelligence and the End of the Human Era

James Barrat '83Stephen Hawking recently supposed that the human race could be “superseded” by artificial intelligence. Elon Musk chimed in by likening current AI evolution to “summoning the demon.”

So CNN called James Barrat ’83 for expert commentary, based on his book Our Final Invention: Artificial Intelligence and the End of the Human Era. (Thomas Dunne Books, 2013)

“In the short term, there’s no shortage of malicious people developing battlefield robots and drones,” Barrat told CNN in the five-minute segment. “In the long term, we’re making a fundamental error in thinking, that superintelligent machines will be benign or harmless or… friendly. We don’t have any idea how to program friendliness into machines, and yet we’re developing as fast as we can something that can dramatically out-think us.”
