At 3:30 p.m., Saturday, May 15, in Tyler Tallman Hall, some of the best chamber musicians in the nation will compete in the annual Young Chamber Musicians competition. WDAV 89.9 FM and OrthoCarolina have teamed up for the second time in support of young musicians. Last year, they limited the applicant pool to the Carolinas, but this year opened it up to the entire nation. There is $4,500 in prize money up for grabs, and there are four groups competing. Their video submissions are currently posted on WDAV.org and are open to a public vote, which will be combined with the judges' scores to determine the winners.
Chamber music is a form of classical music for small groups in which each instrument plays an equal role and non-verbal communication between musicians is crucial because there is no conductor. About 40 groups entered the preliminary competition and sources say the quality of the performances will be top-notch.
