New York Times: Jack Livings ’96 Wins PEN Prize for Debut Fiction

The DogJack Livings '96 has won the $25,000 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction for "The Dog," a collection of stories set in China.

Professor of English Emeritus Gill Holland reviewed the book for the Davidson Journal in 2014.

"But one need not have been to China to embrace the wonders here-these are sentences and paragraphs to read and reread again," wrote Holland. "The payoff? Delight and wisdom.... With "The Dog"-a striking debut-Livings captures the tensions of a society in flux with master strokes of language, both broad and fine, that recall Chinese calligraphy."
