World Politics Review: Weak Central Government Makes Security in Somalia a Local Issue

SomaliaRecent events in Somalia, including a suicide bomb attack Sunday that killed at least 20 people and left more than 60 injured, have again raised questions about the country's tenuous security situation. The editors of World Politics Review turned to Professor and Chair of Political Science Ken Menkhaus to discuss the fight against al-Shabab and the state of security in Somalia.

"The security situation across Somalia is harder to generalize than one might expect. Most media reports give the impression that Somalia is uniformly dangerous, but actual security conditions for local communities vary tremendously along regional, neighborhood, class and ethnic lines," Menkhaus notes.
