Ballet Hispanico
The Artist Series includes performances by Ballet Hispanico and four others this season.

The C. Shaw and Nancy K. Smith Artist Series has announced its 2016-17 season, covering a diverse range of entertainment and cultural offerings.

"The selection committee spent hours getting feedback from a campus known for its interdisciplinary fusion of thoughts," said Artist Series Committee Chair Sana Alimohamed '17, "and like typical Davidson students, spent countless hours researching artists to make sure this year's showcase set the standard."

The season:

  • The Second City Presents: Free Speech (While Supplies Last) on Sept. 24–Chicago's legendary sketch and improv comedy theatre
  • The Harlem Gospel Choir on Nov. 4–America's gospel choir, with power vocals, glorious sound and infectious energy
  • Ballet Hispanico on Nov. 12–The nation's premier Latino dance company that explores, preserves and celebrates Latino culture
  • Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana Presents: Poema de Andalucía on Jan. 31–a brilliantly colored show on a journey through the cultures of the Andalusian provinces
  • Aquila Theatre in William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing on March 1–Mistaken identity, espionage and deceptions take center stage in Shakespeare's famous comedy.

Since the inception of the Smith Artist Series, student organizers have taken great pride in selecting and presenting a series that students, faculty, staff and members of the surrounding community can all enjoy and experience with their friends and family members.

More than 70 years ago, a series of performances by visiting musicians and choral groups was introduced to students and surrounding community members. In 1975, the students became heavily involved and primarily responsible for the Artist Series, including ticket sales, artist selection, publicity and the preparation and clean-up of all events. In 2002, the series was named the C. Shaw and Nancy K. Smith Artist Series in honor of C. Shaw Smith, the first college union director and his wife, Nancy. Smith served for nearly 30 years and left an everlasting, and often entertaining, impression on Davidson students.
