Technology Conversations: Wed., Sept. 24, 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, September 24, from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., you are invited to a drop-in conversation session with ITS staff in the Baxter-Davidson Room, Chambers 2106. We have planned a few topics as conversation starters and they include:

Classroom upgrades & new technology classroom

The technology in 60 percent of Chambers classrooms was upgraded over the summer and additional upgrades are planned for winter break. We also created a new technology classroom in the library. The layout is based on user-centered research and creates an environment that facilitates faculty and student collaboration. We invite your feedback and comments on these and future upgrades.

Google Apps

We recently announced the availability and single sign-on to Google Apps, a set of web-enabled applications including Google Slides, Google Sheets, Google Docs, and Google Drive. ITS staff will be on hand to demonstrate and answer questions.

Echo 360

If you need a tool to help you implement a flipped class model, we invite you to try Echo360. We are in the second year pilot of Echo360 and are looking for additional faculty to implement and evaluate the tool in their courses. Echo360 comes with a "Personal Capture" application you load on your computer to create screencast recordings. The recordings can include narrated Keynote or PowerPoint slideshows and/or video of yourself in a side-by-side layout. Videos can be used for flipping content, supplemental reviews, student-generated presentations, and end of course exam reviews. In addition to flipping your content, Echo360 offers an in-class active learning tool called "LectureTools" that enables polling, back channel questions, and peer-to-peer instruction. We invite you to review the Echo360 website for more information on flipped classrooms and student engagement/active learning.

Studio M

The open hours of the makerspace have been expanded this semester. Students, faculty, and their classes are taking advantage of the equipment and resources available to them. Claire Gutermuth ’15 will show and discuss her OpenHand project.

iPhone 6, iOS8, Apple Watch

Apple recently launched two new smartphones, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, a new mobile device operating system, iOS 8, and the Apple Watch. ITS staff will be available to answer your questions about these new Apple products.

New Windows hardware

A Lenovo ThinkPad and a Lenovo all-in-one desktop have been added to the list of recommended systems provided and supported by ITS. There are also two new models of Dell laptops available. Stop by to see the new computers and chat with ITS staff about the expanded offerings.

We look forward to engaging you in conversation about these and other technology topics. Refreshments will be available along with giveaways from Lenovo and Dell.
