Davidson Theatre Department and Friends of the Arts Welcome Renowned Director Lou Bellamy

Director Lou Bellamy
Lou Bellamy is the founder and artistic director of Penumbra Theatre.

On Wednesday the Davidson Theatre Department and Friends of the Arts welcome renowned director Lou Bellamy, who will field questions about his work in theatre and efforts on behalf of human rights and social justice during an open questions-and-answers session. His upcoming production of The Mountaintop, a re-imagining of events the night before the assassination of  Martin Luther King Jr., opens at Charlotte's Blumenthal Performing Arts Center Feb. 4.

Bellamy is the founder and artistic director of Penumbra Theatre in Saint Paul, Minn., whose mission is to uphold and celebrate the contributions of African Americans to our cultural life and to foster their continued involvement therein. Under Bellamy's leadership, Penumbra has produced 23 world premieres, including August Wilson's first professional production.

In addition to his role at Penumbra, Bellamy is an award-winning director, accomplished actor, and has been a member of the faculty in the Theatre Arts and Dance Department at University of Minnesota for more than 30 years.

Davidson maintains a growing relationship with Penumbra, and for the last two years has sent student interns to help with the theatre's summer institute, which focuses on theater as a mechanism for social justice. The Davidson students work with Penumbra staff to facilitate classes for teens in music, theatre, and movement.  Students again will travel to Penumbra this summer.
