The Mitchell Scholarship is not accepting applications in 2024.

The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program allows future American leaders to pursue a year of graduate study in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The program's goal is to provide tomorrow's leaders with an understanding about, an interest in, and an affinity for the island of Ireland. 

Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on academic excellence, a record of outstanding leadership, and a sustained commitment to community and public service. The Mitchell Scholarship Program provides tuition, accommodation, a stipend for living expenses and travel.

Eligibility

The Mitchell Scholarship is not accepting applications in 2024.

  • Class year: Seniors and alumni who will have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university before beginning study as a Mitchell Scholar and who are 18 years of age or older, but not yet 30, on September 28 of the year of application.
  • Citizenship: U.S. citizens
  • GPA: No specific minimum, but must be competitive for admission to relevant graduate programs in the candidate's field of study in Ireland.

Other eligibility guidelines:

  • Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, a record of outstanding leadership, and a sustained commitment to community and public service.
