Job Shadowing Externship Program
Job Shadowing Externship Program Update
At this time, the Betty and B. Frank Matthews II ’49 Center for Career Development (Matthews Center) has decided to postpone the Job Shadowing Externship Program and will reevaluate in the future. Our aim as always, is to provide you all with a safe and meaningful experience and therefore we will hold off for now. Stay tuned for more information, and if you have any questions please feel free to email Saleem Clarke directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Offered late spring and throughout the summer, our Job Shadowing Externship Program provides one-day and multi-day shadowing experiences that allow students to spend time with alumni or parent volunteers at work.
Through observation and conversation, participating students have the opportunity to learn more about professions, receive career-related advice, and reflect on the ways in which their liberal arts education can prepare them for life after Davidson.
More than 200 hosts register for the program each year, which has allowed more than 100 students to complete nearly 200 different shadowing experiences each summer.
Being with a full-time reporter at Courthouse News was an incredible experience because I want to be a full-time reporter myself. Amanda answered all of my questions and offered me a good look into what my future life could be like. It could not have been better. Also, it was my first experience in court. I am so glad that Davidson has this program because it is extremely unique and such a great way to make connections! Please keep doing it!
How to Participate for Students
Shadowing opportunities are offered to students during spring and summer. Students participating in shadowing opportunities that require an overnight stay can request to be connected with alumni and parents who have volunteered to offer short-term homestays, and may be eligible to apply for expense reimbursements to help offset travel and accommodation expenses.
How to Participate for Hosts
Davidson alumni, parents, and friends of the college from diverse industries sign up to host student shadows for one or two days in cities all over the country. As a host, you can provide job shadowing opportunities for students, or you can provide a short homestay for Davidson students who are shadowing in your area.
