The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's German Chancellor Fellowship allows you to conduct an independent project at a host institution, in cooperation with a host in Germany you have selected for one year. The project should involve original exploration of a topic or issue, or research in the fellow's respective field of interest. Projects should be of relevance to modern societies, have a long-term and visible impact, and help to advance your career and professional development. Through your experience in Germany, you will acquire greater knowledge of your fields, gain new international experience, and strengthen your intercultural competence – all essential qualities for future professional leaders.
For fellows with few or no German language skills, the stay in Germany begins with a mandatory three-month intensive language course from June to the end of August. There also is an option to extend the language course to four months (beginning in May). The fellowship itself is awarded for 12 months and begins in September with a four-week introductory seminar in Bonn and Berlin, which provides insights into social, political, business and cultural life in Germany. This is followed by 11 months of individual project work starting in October. During the spring, fellows participate in a two-week study tour of Germany. Fellowship extensions of up to three months are possible.
Up to 10 fellowships each for the United States, Russian Federation, and People's Republic of China. The fellowship amount is 2,150 EUR, 2.450 EUR or 2,750 EUR per month, depending on the fellow's qualifications. This stipend includes a travel allowance and a contribution towards health and liability insurance.
Individuals with demonstrated leadership potential; applicants whose background is largely academic should also have gained some leadership experience beyond their own research activities.
Two or three, plus the institutional endorsement letter.
Campus deadline is in early September. Interviews take place in your home country.
