New Student Orientation Schedule

Below is the 2018 Orientation schedule. 

Attendance is mandatory at starred (*) events.

Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2018

10 a.m.–6 p.m.
Davidson College Store open – 137 N. Main Street

5–7 p.m.
Dinner available – Vail Commons (cash, check or credit card)

6–9 p.m.
Optional Early Move-in – Residence Halls
You may choose to ease the busy pace of Orientation by placing your belongings in the residence hall during these hours. Please observe the signs that will direct you to the unloading area closest to your residence hall. You will be able to unload your car near the door of your residence hall. A driver must stay with the car at all times. Immediately after unloading your car, please move your car to make room for other new students. New students will not sleep in the residence halls until Thursday night, August 16. Please park in the Baker Sports Complex parking lot when you return Thursday morning.

Helpful Hint: Cars will not be allowed to line up for unloading prior to 6 p.m., and the line tends to be at its longest at the start of the evening. You may prefer to enjoy a leisurely dinner and queue up later in the evening (move-in ends at 9 p.m.).

7:30–9 a.m.
Breakfast available – Vail Commons or Davis Café (pay with cash, check or credit card). Note: the café opens at 8 a.m. in the Alvarez College Union.

9 a.m.–6 p.m.
Davidson College Store open – 137 N. Main St.

*8:30–11 a.m.
Student Check-In – Baker Sports Complex (use Vance entrance)
You will receive important information and your Davidson College identification card (CatCard). Check-in may take up to 45 minutes. Parent and Family check-in is located in the same building, along with the Orientation Fair. After you check in, we recommend that you plan to meet your parents and families either at the Orientation Fair or in your residence hall.
Doors will not open before 8:30 a.m.

Orientation Fair – Baker Sports Complex
After you check in, you and your family may want to visit with representatives from different college departments and programs that will be available to answer questions and describe their services. Some of the participating departments include: Dining Services, Business Services, Computer Services, CatCard Services and area banks.

Move-In continues – Residence Halls
Hall counselors will distribute room keys and important information to new students once they have checked in. If you move in Thursday morning, please follow the signs that direct you to the unloading area closest to your residence hall.

Warehouse open – 209 Ridge Road (to pick up shipped items)

10–11 a.m.
Kitchen Tour – Vail Commons
For students and parents and families of students with food allergies and special dietary needs, a tour of the kitchen and information on the Food Allergy Policy will be offered at Vail Commons.

11 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Lunch
Visit any of the wonderful restaurants in town or have lunch on campus at Vail Commons, Summit (located on Patterson Court across from Martin Court) or Davis Café (located in the Alvarez College Union).

*1 p.m.
Opening Session with Carol Quillen - Baker Sports Complex
New students and their families will receive a special welcome from President Carol Quillen and other campus leaders.

*2:15 p.m.
OTM Chat
New students will meet their Orientation Team Member (OTM) and Orientation groups. Instructions to find your OTM will be given at the end of the opening session. 

*2:45–5:30 p.m.
Davidson Resources
You will learn about campus resources. The packet you receive during check-in will contain your schedule and locations for each session.

5–7 p.m.
Dinner available – Vail Commons or Davis Café (café closes at 8 p.m.)
You may begin using your CatCard for meals.
Note: Transfer students gather for dinner together in The Annex in Vail Commons at 6 p.m.

*8–10 p.m.
Hall Meetings
Check with your hall counselor for the specific start time of your hall meeting. Meetings will last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour.

9:30–11 p.m.
Union Board Ice Cream Social - Alvarez College Union

Friday, Aug. 17, 2018

During your group meeting at 9:30 a.m., you and your adviser will schedule an individual meeting time for later in the day.

11:30 a.m.
Farewell Picnic Lunch – Chambers Lawn (Rain location: Baker Sports Complex)
Be our guest for lunch under the trees with your parents and families before they head home. First-year hallmates and their families will sit together, as will transfer students and their families. Signs will direct you to your table. Come spend time with your new neighbors and friends!

12:30–3:30 p.m.
Computer and Device Setup Assistance - Residence Halls and Technology and Innovation on Main St. (213 N. Main St.)
Drop by the Belk main entrance, the lounge on the first floor of Richardson, or Technology and Innovation headquarters for wireless and network configuration assistance. Space is limited and we ask that only students attend this fair.

1:30–3:30 p.m.
Explore a Little (Library) – Lobby, E. H. Little Library
Drop in for a brief tour of the library. Check out places to study, browse treasures in archives & special collections, and see the set and props from a recent movie filmed here! You can enter a drawing for a library carrel or gift card.

*4–5:30 p.m.
A Community of Respect – Duke Family Performance Hall in the Knobloch Campus Center
Davidson students and administrators reflect on the importance of respecting ourselves, each other, the law and campus rules.

*5:30 p.m.
Class of 2022 Picture – Richardson Stadium
This one’s for posterity! Join your classmates for a class picture on the Smith Football Field. (rain cancels)

6 p.m.
Dinner - Vail Commons

*7:30 p.m.
Davidson does Charlotte: An Evening at the Levine Museum
Gather with your Orientation group and load the buses for a party at the Levine Museum, and an opportunity to learn about the past, present and future of the Charlotte region. 
Buses will load in the parking lot of the Baker Sports Complex

Guided Meditation
Prefer some quiet time? Join Grace Burford, Director of the Davidson Meditation Initiative, for a guided meditation. Meet in the Oasis, located on the fourth floor of the Alvarez College Union.

Come to the Spencer-Weinstein Center for Community and Justice for board games and downtime.

The Life of the Mind/Book Discussion - Duke Family Performance Hall in the Knobloch Campus Center
Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Wendy E. Raymond addresses new students with comments about the common reading. Immediately following her address, a panel of Davidson faculty, staff and alumni, joined by author Pamela Grundy, will discuss this year's book. Q&A to follow.

Honor Code and Code of Responsibility Commitment Ceremony - Meet on your hall at 7 p.m.
New students learn about the Honor Code and participate in the commitment ceremony. Attendance is mandatory and recorded.

For Transfer Students

Orientation begins on Thursday, Aug. 16. For your convenience, as a transfer student you may choose to move into your residence hall room from 6 to 9 p.m. and stay the night of Wednesday, Aug. 15. Move-in continues on Thursday, Aug. 16, from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
