Davidson College, at no cost to employees, provides for long term disability (LTD) coverage in the event of an accident or illness that causes an employee to be out of work for longer than 6 months. This benefit pays 60% of the employee's salary while he/she is on LTD. Employment at Davidson College is terminated after 6 months when the STD benefit ends.
Active, full-time employees who are regularly scheduled to work 37.50 hours or more per week and 12 months per year are eligible to enroll in this benefit
Eligible employees who elect this benefit are covered on the first of the month following 30 days of employment
A doctor must certify that the employee is totally unable to return to work.
The college's long-term disability insurance carrier must also approve any request for long-term disability.
In accordance with the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986 (COBRA), employees leaving the college may be eligible to continue health insurance coverage at their own expense. College contributions to health insurance premiums are discontinued on the last day of employment at Davidson.
Effective October 1, 2016, any employee who leaves the college's employment because of total disability who was on our healthcare plan and who has at least one year of continuous service at the time disability leave begins will be eligible to continue on our healthcare plan at the same rate as active employees for a period of up to 24 months. Coverage will end at the earliest of the following: when the employee is no longer totally disabled or 24 months from the date employment ends. This extension of healthcare coverage will run concurrent with COBRA.
