Major and Minor

Instruction in theatre includes both theory and practice, the combination of which will develop in you skills and knowledge in all aspects of theatrical performance, as well as creative problem solving and collaboration–skills that will serve you well in a wide variety of careers, both on and off the stage.

Majors are required to complete backstage work on at least two department productions for a minimum of 50 hours per show in a capacity other than actor, director, or designer. At least one instance of backstage work must be in stage management.

Minors must work on one department production for a minimum of 30 hours in a capacity other than actor or director.

Courses You Might Take

THE 245 Acting I

This course focuses on the study and application of the psycho-physical and emotional bases of performance. Emphasis is placed on relaxation of the actor’s body, ensemble improvisation, freeing the natural voice and acting on impulse. Training will culminate in realistic scene work.
THE 235 Fundamentals of Stage Design

Have you ever wondered how the world of the play comes to life? This course is an introduction to the process of creating scenery, costumes, and lighting for stage productions. Students practice creating visual compositions and learn the necessary vocabulary for effectively communicating design ideas. 
THE 285 Politics and Performance: 20th Century Theatre and Drama

This course offers a study of plays and theatrical theory from a range of geographic regions. The course explores ways practitioners experimented with form and content in articulating their reactions to the human condition of the 20th century.
