You Would Have Been Contracted to a Maid: Reflections on the History of Staging Gender, Sex, and Genre in Twelfth Night

Shakespeare scholar James Schiffer, former academic dean at SUNY New Paltz, will set the stage for the opening of the Theatre Department’s production of Twelfth Night on Friday, October 25. Professor Schiffer has recently edited a volume of new essays on Twelfth Night, a play preoccupied with questions about the nature of gender and perspectives on sexual attraction. He will speak about how performances have historically taken up such matters.

Admission is free. No ticket required.

Refreshments will be provided by Davidson College’s Friends of the Arts.
The lecture is sponsored by the Public Lectures Committee and the English, Gender Studies, and Theatre Departments.
