My teaching interests include young adult fiction, multicultural children's literature, and contemporary women writers, and I teach several writing courses, including creative nonfiction, memoir, professional writing, and writing with the community. I have research interests in writing center theory and practice, second language writing, digital writing, and information fluency.

Much of my teaching and research focuses on the history of reading and other forms of popular media consumption, including the periodical press, theater, and music. My current research focuses on Victorian humor and what it can tell us about book history. I have also published on children's literature and the relationship between music and text.

I have taught in the fields of Rhetoric and Writing Studies for the past 30 years, 16 of them spent at Duke University, where I directed the university Writing Program. My interests include visual rhetorics, deliberative writing, and the operations of public memory. I have published essays on civic rhetoric, U.S. literacy education, and public memorials.

I specialize in nonfiction writing, film, and literary theory. My interests include composition theory, writing-across-the-curriculum, documentary film, literacy and technology, and narrative theory. My most recent publications concern documentary film theory and techniques for responding to writing.
