The Music Department has a thriving instrumental ensemble program, showcasing students in more than fifteen public performances each season.

All students, regardless of major, are welcome to participate in our various offerings. Most rehearsals take place after 4:30 p.m. or during common hour and are scheduled to avoid conflict with the class day.

Our two largest, auditioned ensembles include the Davidson College Symphony Orchestra (DCSO) and Jazz Ensemble. Other ensembles include African Drumming Ensemble, Appalachian Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and Saxophone Quartet.

Davidson College Symphony Orchestra

The Symphony Orchestra (DCSO) is an auditioned ensemble of approximately 50 student musicians, performing a wide range of repertoire from the Baroque to the present. The orchestra performs 2-3 concerts per semester, and features annually the student concerto competition winners and guest soloists.

Jazz Ensemble

The Davidson College Jazz Ensemble is an auditioned "big band" of approximately 18 musicians. The group rehearses and performs throughout the year with several events highlighting the schedule
