Artist Talk: Mikael Owunna
Limitless Africans is an upcoming narrative photobook published by FotoEvidence documenting the narratives of over 30 LGBTQ African immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in 10 countries across North America and Europe. Published in the New York Times and captured by queer Nigerian-Swedish-American photographer and Fulbright scholar, the work provides an integrated look at precolonial African sexuality and contemporary queer African narratives to debunk the myth that it is 'un-African' to be gay. Owunna will present a talk about precolonial African sexuality as part of the book launch.
In conjunction with his talk, Owunna’s work is on view in the Hamilton W. McKay Atrium at the E. Craig Wall Jr. Academic Center September 10-December 10, 2019. Exhibition and programming made possible through the Bacca Foundation Visiting Lecture and Artist Fund, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and the Williamson Fund.
