Native South Carolinians, Ranky Tanky (loosely translated as “Work It!” or “Get Funky!”) bring life to the soulful songs of Gullah culture, fusing them with elements of jazz, gospel, funk, and R&B. Gullah comes from the languages of West Africa and means “a people blessed by God”. From playful game songs to ecstatic shouts, from heartbreaking spirituals to delicate lullabies, the musical roots of Charleston, SC are “rank” and fertile ground from which these five contemporary artists are grateful to have grown.
