Nupur Joshi

I am a human-environment geographer broadly interested in the processes of urbanization in global South cities, particularly East Africa and South Asia. I grew up in India and moved to the United States in 2017 to pursue my PhD. I bring my lived experience to the classroom by incorporating more of international perspectives, non-academic sources, and mindfulness in learning. I strive to create a safe learning environment for all students and especially alleviate minoritized perspectives. 

My research has focused on cities, mainly in marginalized areas such as informal and “slum” settlements because that is where most vulnerable populations live, and the absolute numbers of these populations are expected to grow dramatically by 2050. I use a broad range of qualitative, quantitative, and collaborative methods including household surveys, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, participatory mapping, and open-access large survey datasets in my research. 

Currently, I am doing research in large Indian cities on the impacts of climate change related heatwaves on informal migrant workers, specifically those working in the construction industry.
