Vanitas: A Multimedia Lecture, Demonstration, and Performance
Vanitas is a centuries-old genre of art, especially favored in The Netherlands, that introduces reminders of mortality into still life paintings, intended to emphasize the fragility of life and the inevitability of death. The evening will consist of an introduction to the genre, a highlighting of many Vanitas paintings by artist Andrew Leventis, discussions with art historian Bonnie Noble, and performances by Cynthia Lawing, Dylan Savage, and David Russell.
