The Guardian: Davidson Team Creates World Cup Ranking Website

The website Fifa Foe Fun, created by a team of mathematicians led by Davidson professors Tim Chartier and Mike Mossinghoff, allows users to build rankings of World Cup soccer teams. The site launched today and was chosen as a favorite by The Guardian newspaper.

The tool offers a variety of parameters and options users can weigh and tweak to come up with their rankings. According to Chartier, "Ranking is looking to quantify (and find) skill within the randomness and luck of the game. If there isn't enough differentiation of skill, then things vary a lot as you wade through randomness and elements of luck. There isn't ONE way to do this. That's part of the fun."
