Lenscratch: McNair Evans '01 Featured in the States Project (California)
A recent Lenscratch profile of photographer McNair Evans '01 gives great insight into his creative approach and process. A North Carolina native currently living in San Francisco, the 2016 Guggenheim Photography Fellow explores themes of shared experiences and identity in his work, which draws largely from his childhood and relationship with his father.
"In many ways photography is like music and language. It carries regional dialects and characteristics, markers of the creator's cultural origins," he said.
As an anthropology major at Davidson, Evans used photography as a means of ethnography. It was then that his interest in the art form took shape.
Evans' photographs are exhibited and held in public and private collections including those of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Sir Elton John. His work has been featured in editorial publications such as Harper's Magazine and The New Yorker, as well as on the cover of William Faulkner's novel, Flags in the Dust.
