Physics Students Join Sigma Pi Sigma

On the afternoon of May 2, the Physics Department welcomed 10 new members into Sigma Pi Sigma. Honors thesis lectures were also presented by two seniors, both graduating this May.

Sigma Pi Sigma, founded in 1921 at Davidson College, is part of the American Institute of Physics, and a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. The primary purpose of Sigma Pi Sigma is to honor outstanding scholarship in physics, encourage interest in physics, promote service and provide fellowship. Members are elected on the basis of outstanding academic achievement.

Prof. Laurence Cain conducted the ceremony. He began by delivering a brief introduction into the origins of Sigma Pi Sigma and then calling the new members to sign their names to the official register and present them with their pins. The inductees are: Cort Coxhead '18, Alex Demopolous '17, Collin Epstein '18, Cody Herron '17, Alex Karbo '18, Tan Phan '18, Ryan Stempert '18, Xan Stoddard '17, Jack Taylor ‘18 and Tina Yuan '18.

Honors thesis lectures were given by Nikos Dokmetzoglou '17 and Vincent Hickl '17. Nikos' topic was Recursion Relations for Gluon Scattering Amplitudes in AdS4/CFT3. He will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall. Vincent presented A Spectral Study of the Quantum-Mechanical Asymmetric Infinite Square Well and plans to continue his studies at the University of Illinois.
