Prof. Jane Mangan Awarded Book Prizes

Professor Jane Mangan was recently awarded the American Historical Association's (AHA) 2017 Friedrich Katz Prize in Latin American and Caribbean history for her book, Transatlantic Obligations: Creating the Bonds of Family in Conquest-Era Peru and Spain (Oxford Univ. Press, 2016).

Professor Jane Mangan's book, Transatlantic Obligations, won the Rocky Mountain Council of Latin American Studies (RMCLAS) Bandelier/Lavrin Book Prize in Colonial Latin American History. 

In sixteenth-century Peru and Spain, even as migration, race mixture, and transculturation took place, family members fulfilled obligations by adapting custom to a changing world. By tracing these family obligations connecting Peru and Spain through dowries, bequests, legal powers, and letters, Transatlantic Obligations presents a powerful call to rethink sixteenth-century definitions of family.

Jane Mangan is the Mary Reynolds Babcock Professor of History and Latin American Studies. She teaches upper-level courses on colonialism, gender, immigration, U.S. Latino history, and revolution, and survey courses on colonial and modern Latin American history.
