Every Picture Tells a Story: 2021-22 in Photos

Big announcements, twin commencements, sports team triumphs and closer connections marked the 2021-22 academic year.
As we head into summer, let’s take a moment to celebrate everything that made 2021-22 memorable. Here, Davidson College Photographer Christopher Record shares a collection of his favorite frames from the year.









President Carol Quillen receives a standing ovation at the Ne Ultra event honoring her tenure as president of the college. Quillen steps down this July after 11 years of leadership.

The college hosted two commencement ceremonies this spring–one for the class of 2022, followed by a long-awaited ceremony for the class of 2020. Nearly 400 members of the class returned to campus, along with family and friends, to celebrate in person.

Left to right: Brandon Reid ’22 (formerly Harris) reconnected with a childhood friend, Sura Sohna, who was serving a 14-year prison sentence. Reid’s relationship with Sohna was a factor in a judge’s decision to release Sohna 12 years early. Sohna visited campus this spring.

President-elect Doug Hicks ’90 talks to students outside of the Duke Family Performance Hall following an event announcing his selection as Davidson’s 19th president. Hicks will take office Aug. 1.

Faculty led students outdoors to enjoy the many outdoor classroom spaces around campus.

The Cake Race tradition came back this year, and the class of 2026 came out in full force; so did the bakers–hundreds of cakes and cupcakes awaited the students, beckoning from beyond the finish line.

Dean of Faculty Philip Jefferson left his post in May to join the Federal Reserve System Board of Governors.
