Scholar Focused on Untold Stories Returns to Davidson

Hilary Green

Dr. Hilary Green is returning to Davidson as the James B. Duke Professor of Africana Studies, a tenured position, in fall 2022.

She served as the Vann Professor of Ethics in Society during the 2020-21 school year, working with students to uncover more of Davidson’s history.

Green is a Civil War and Reconstruction scholar whose recent scholarship has focused on how African-Americans remembered and commemorated the Civil War and on the often-unacknowledged history and legacy of slavery on university campuses. That work includes her “Hallowed Ground” project at the University of Alabama.

Her appointment fulfills the recommendation by the Davidson College Commission on Race and Slavery to add four faculty members, housed in whole or in part in the Africana Studies Department, including a public historian.
