Davidson Student Awarded Projects for Peace Grant

March 17, 2023

The Center for Civic Engagement has named Samuel Waithira '24 this year's Projects for Peace grantee.

Having grown up in Githunguri, Kenya, Sam first learned of Davidson as a deeply supportive and resourced community who cares for its international students. He was instantly impressed by the close-knit community.

Since arriving to Davidson, he has become involved across campus including Bonner Scholars, Davidson African Students Association (DASA), Black Student Coalition (BSC), Fashion Club, Davidson International Association (DIA), Orientation Team and the Admission Office. He is pursuing an economics major.

A global grant program, Projects for Peace encourages student initiative, innovation, and entrepreneurship focusing on conflict prevention, resolution, or reconciliation. Students or groups of students can apply for a $10,000 grant to support projects that promote peace and address the root causes of conflict among parties.

Here's how Sam describes his project that he'll be pursuing this summer.

My project, Growing Futures: Agricultural Empowerment for Hosanna Children's Home, seeks to meet the financial costs of running Hosanna through sustainable agriculture. The project will involve agricultural and agribusiness training and the setting up of a pig farm at the children's home. The project will help meet Hosanna's running costs and provide the community with a space to learn about sustainable agriculture. Through the project, I hope to create a financially resilient Hosanna that teaches sustainable agriculture to the community.

The Davidson community is eager to see how the project unfolds, and we are proud to be a partner institution that helps lift up and support incredible students doing meaningful work in the name of peace.
