Education is a Public Good

May 22, 2025

Davidson College said farewell to the class of 2025 with a reminder that the diploma they each earned represents a public good. It betters more than their own lives. The work they do boosts the economy, and their conduct in society models mutual respect.

President Doug Hicks said that, while some may view students as customers, that transactional language falls far short in describing a Davidson education.

The graduates will start or join companies and non-profits, put on uniforms and stand posts, treat patients or launch trailblazing research. The impact of their education extends far beyond themselves.

Davidson, like most institutions, is imperfect but constantly under renovation, he said. And so are students.

“The Preamble of the U.S. Constitution says, ‘We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union,’’’ Hicks said. “That phrase continues to inspire us, reminding us that we should be continually striving, even if we move in fits and starts, to make our nation better.”

While social, economic, political and cultural differences often divide people, he said, Davidson seeks to unite through a rigorous liberal arts curriculum, a tight-knit residential community and a faculty, staff and students coming from vastly different backgrounds, perspectives and experiences.

The 502 graduates represent 21 countries, 46 American states and Washington, D.C.

“The very act of creating a college that values freedom of expression, diverse viewpoints, and mutual respect is itself a public good, serving not only Davidson, but our wider society,” Hicks said. “That’s the work of Davidson College and you will carry it out.”

Their task won’t be easy, he said, but is necessary:

“I see your humanity. I have witnessed your transformation into people who are ready to lead and serve. The world needs you and your humane instincts.”

In his address to the class of 2025, Davidson College President Doug Hicks ’90 heralds the transformational work of education and its benefits to society and the graduates who will go out into the world, ready to lead and serve.
