Background

I teach courses related to sociological theory, health and social movements. As an educator, I make it my priority to equip students with tools to analyze the social world. I believe engendering the sociological imagination in students is the bedrock of their education. Through the sociological imagination, students can see how their own lives are grounded in the abstract concepts they learn in class.

My research focuses on the social determinates of health and well-being, particularly for the LGBTQ community, as well as political and legal sociology. My article "Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual human rights as a global health issue" underscores the importance of using a global political focus to understand health disparities. I intend to expand this research to look at the health disparities faced by the wider LGBTQ community and other marginalized groups. In addition to my cross-national research, I am interested in the sociology of culture, social norms and stigma.
