The Science Behind GLP-1 Medications 

Presented by Erland Stevens, James G. Martin Professor of Chemistry

In 2005, the first GLP-1 drug was approved. Since that time, advances in the drug class have expanded the corresponding market dramatically. This session will trace the history of GLP-1 drugs, emphasizing how chemical changes across drugs affect dosing regimens. Potential near-term drug approvals in diabetes and weight loss spaces will also be discussed.

Immigration: What Economics Can Tell Us and What It Cannot

Discussions on immigration often generate plenty of heat, but what does the evidence actually show? In this session, Professor Gouri Suresh will separate what economists know with reasonable confidence from what remains contested, and both from the questions economics cannot answer at all.

Behind the Scoreboard: Sports Analytics at Davidson

Presented by Tim Chartier, Joseph R. Morton Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science

What can data tell us about the games we love? From March Madness brackets to decisions facing professional teams, sports offer a lively setting for exploring how numbers reveal patterns and inform decisions. Join this class for a look at the questions sports analytics can tackle and the thinking that turns data into useful insights. He will also share how Davidson students take on real sports analytics problems, highlighting their work with Davidson teams and organizations across the NBA, MLB, NFL, NASCAR, and ESPN. No background in mathematics or data analytics is needed—just curiosity.

A Biologist Walks into an Art Gallery
 

Presented by Dave Wessner, Chair and Professor of Biology

Too often, we consider science and the arts as separate ways of knowing. Yet, there is true value in melding these subjects. In this interactive session, we will explore the benefit of using art to augment discussions about HIV/AIDS and COVID-19. We’ll begin by investigating a student-curated art exhibition developed by Davidson biology students. Then, we will see how this approach can convey information to the public. Finally, we will explore a few works of art from the Davidson collection and discuss what these works tell us about science.

Economics at Davidson: New Faculty, New Directions
 

Presented by Angela Cools, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor of Economics;  Austin Denteh, Assistant Professor of Economics; and Pedro Casavilca Silva, Assistant Professor of Economics; Moderated by Jaya Jha, Chair and Boone Associate Professor of Economics

Families and guests are invited to a moderated conversation with the Economics Department chair and three recently tenured and pre-tenured faculty. The panelists will share what brought them here and the questions their research asks. They will discuss why those questions matter and how that work reaches the classroom, giving students the chance to learn and conduct research of their own. The session closes with a 20-minute open Q&A, including questions on economics in the age of AI.

A darkly comedic take on Shakespeare’s Macbeth about the very ambitious and the cut-throat world of high school during college admissions. 

Open to the public, but tickets are required. Student tickets are free.
