Through our Educational Studies department, teaching and tutoring are high-impact experiential learning pathways. Here, theory meets practice. Join a powerful collaboration with the Augustine Literacy Project (ALP) to combat the local literacy crisis. Kaitlyn Busch ’25, an Educational Studies and Hispanic Studies double major, leveraged her extensive tutoring background at Davidson (Ada Jenkins, ALP, SiDES) into a UNC Master’s in Teaching, a Fulbright in Uruguay, and a career teaching elementary school in North Carolina.

Volunteering in a school is an opportunity to step off campus and ground yourself in work that will make you a better teacher, scholar, and person. You will find yourself taking knowledge from your courses at Davidson into the classroom you work in, and experiences from that classroom back into your courses.”
Hannah Matos ’22, a Hispanic Studies major and Educational Studies minor who served as a tutor (ALP, SiDES) and AT at Davidson, is currently pursuing a Master's in Applied Linguistics at UNAM in Mexico City.
“The diverse teaching opportunities I had while at Davidson, particularly those in bilingual contexts, provided me practical experience in the education field that informed my next steps post-grad. My exposure to literacy and language teaching as an undergraduate student, both with children and adult students, prepared me to teach English at a vocational school in Madrid upon graduating, work as a preschool teacher in a bilingual program for three years, and offer English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for youths and adults in the community.”
Steve Mirabello ’25, a Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) and French & Francophone Studies double major who co-founded Davidson Reads and tutored locally (ALP, Read Charlotte), is currently pursuing an MSc in Philosophy and Public Policy at the London School of Economics.

The Summer Promise Program allows Davidson students to put educational equity and mentorship into practice right on campus. As resident counselors, program facilitators, and academic mentors, you’ll help guide local, rising ninth-graders through a transformative, residential preview of college life. It’s a powerful opportunity to build hands-on leadership skills, mentor the next generation of scholars, and directly support Davidson's ongoing commitment to community engagement and educational access.
