Prehealth Societies and Student Organizations
As a student you also may have the opportunity to participate in a prehealth society, interacting with students and colleagues with similar interests and goals. Premedical Society
The Premedical Society recognizes students for academic excellence and service to the community. Students who have achieved an overall GPA of 3.2 are eligible to apply for membership after three semesters of introductory science course. The purpose of the Premedical Society is to encourage excellence in scholarship, to stimulate an appreciation of the importance of pre-medicine education, to bring together similarly interested students and to benefit health organizations, charities, and the community.
Minority Association for Premedical Students (MAPS)
Minority Association for Premedical Students (MAPS) seeks to provide an encouraging and productive outlet for pre-health professional students to participate in community service within the surrounding communities, academic growth through programming. Specifically engaging students of color, first-generation, need-based, and traditionally under-represented groups.
Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA)
The mission of HOSA is to empower HOSA-Future Health Professionals to become leaders in the global health community through education, collaboration, and experience. The purpose of HOSA-Future Health Professionals is to develop leadership and technical HOSA skill competencies through a program of motivation, awareness and recognition, which is an integral part of the Health Science Education instructional program. The goals that HOSA believes are vital to each member are: To promote physical, mental and social well being. To develop effective leadership qualities and skills. To develop the ability to communicate more effectively with people. To develop character. To develop responsible citizenship traits. To understand the importance of pleasing oneself as well as being of service to others. To build self-confidence and pride in one's work. To make realistic career choices and seek successful employment in the health care field. To develop an understanding of the importance in interacting and cooperating with other students and organizations. To encourage individual and group achievement. To develop an understanding of current health care issues, environmental concerns, and survival needs of the community, the nation and the world. To encourage involvement in local, state and national health care and education projects. To support Health Science Education instructional objectives. To promote career opportunities in health care.
Predental Society
The Predental Society seeks to educate students about dental careers, to offer mentoring opportunities, and to inform students about the DAT and dental school admissions. This society intends to provide information to students who are interested in pursuing dentistry as a career.
Pre-Physician Assistant Society
The Pre-Physician Assistant Society seeks to educate students about careers as a physician assistant, to invite physician assistants to campus to discuss career options as a physician assistant, to bring physician assistant deans to campus, and to inform students about application issues such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and Central Application Service for Physician's Assistants (CASPA).
Prenursing Society
The Prenursing Society seeks to educate students about careers in nursing, invite nursing professionals to campus to discuss career options as a nurse, bring nursing school deans to campus, and inform students about application issues. The Prenursing Society is somewhat a new organization on campus that is looking for members who are passionate about the nursing field.
Preveterinary Society
The Preveterinary Society seeks to educate students about careers in veterinary sciences and provide support and information to students interested in veterinary school.
Davidson Volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs)
Once you pass the EMT basic certification for North Carolina, students are eligible to volunteer for 10 shifts per semester with the Town of Davidson Fire Department. This includes
- weekend & overnight shifts
- monthly skills and continued education training
- real life and hands-on experience
- ride-alongs
Community Free Clinic
CFC provides structured and scheduled opportunities for Davidson students to volunteer at the Community Free Clinic of Concord, a volunteer-run health clinic designed to provide free medical care to the uninsured. Through our relationship with the free clinic staff, we send students to perform the following roles and any other that the clinic needs: pharmacy technician, Spanish translation, and documentation assistance. This helps to facilitate care for a large number of community members who do not have the means to receive costly out-of-pocket medical treatment.
Neuroscience Club
The Neuroscience Club offers students interested in Neuroscience a forum for dialog about relevant topics including ethics, neurophilosophy, and current research. The organization provides opportunities to interact with those who treat, investigate, and manifest neurological disorders, as well as means to engage in public education directed towards promoting understanding of and appreciation for the nervous system within the college and greater community.
Health Justice Committee
Health Justice Committee is a student run public health organization that works to educate the Davidson College community about health injustices locally and globally. Our goal is to engage students on a wide range of health-related topics which, in the past, have included mental health, geriatric health, maternal health, dating and relationship violence, and preparing for a successful career as a public health professional.
Davidson for the Kids
Davidson for the Kids (formerly Children's Miracle Network Dance Marathon) seeks to bring the campus and community together while raising funds and awareness for Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte.
Leadership, Empowerment, and Advocacy of Diverse Abilities
LEAD will facilitate visibility, inclusion, & support for students and issues related to disabilities, learning differences, and attention deficit at Davidson College. LEAD recognizes that students with learning differences and other disabilities can be academically successful and campus leaders. By providing a system of support through study halls, workshops, and mentor programs for new students, along with an Education Task Force, responsible for bringing speakers to campus to discuss current disability issues and raising community awareness, LEAD seeks to empower students to reach their potential and fully embrace the college experience at Davidson.
Live for Tomorrow: Suicide Awareness and Prevention
Live for Tomorrow is a suicide awareness and prevention club that's mission is to provide resources and implement educational programs in order to create a safer and healthier community on campus.
Students for Serenity House
Members participate in patient care shifts at Serenity House, training sessions, and community involvement events on campus.
