Personal Statement
"I transferred to Davidson from Georgia Tech after my freshman year for four reasons: Davidson's honor code; liberal arts education; excellent reputation for teaching; and Davidson's small class size and strong faculty relationships. These reasons were affirmed during my semester as the James K. Batten Professor of Public Practice, where after forty years, I saw these qualities in action every day with my students and fellow faculty. After my semester teaching about our food systems impact on nutrition, climate change, trade and environment, I've been delighted to mentor a number of young men and women as they pursue future careers in these areas. I am inspired by Davidson's commitment to provide financial aid to attract an economically diverse student body and its commitment to address societal challenges through the D.G. and Harriet Wall Martin Institute for Public Good.
When I transferred to Davidson, I knew Davidson would provide a great liberal arts education. I didn't know that my experiences at Davidson would teach me to be a leader and how to live my values. Throughout my professional career, I have built on what I learned at Davidson: to speak truth to power; to ensure that underrepresented views are heard; and to build consensus among people with different views to solve complex and controversial problems. It would be my privilege and honor to serve on the Davidson Board of Trustees as the alumni representative to ensure that Davidson continues to build on its strengths as the college and society face new and evolving challenges confronting higher education."
