Frank Matthews II ‘49 Center for Career Development Summer Internship Grant

The Matthews Center Summer Internship Grant assists students with cost-of-living expenses while they participate in unpaid or low-paying summer internships. Grants are available in $1,000 -$6,000 amounts.

To be considered for any of the individual named grants below, students and internships must meet the same requirements listed for the Matthews Center for Career Development Summer Internship Grant along with any additional requirements for that particular grant. 

Anne Stanback ’81 and Charlotte Kinlock Internship for Non-profit Leadership

Established by Anne Stanback, Class of 1981, and her wife, Charlotte Kinlock, this internship provides assistance for students who have demonstrated financial need and are pursuing an internship with a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) non-profit organization. 

Bill Boyd Entrepreneurial Internship Grant

The Bill Boyd Entrepreneurial Internship Grant supports students pursuing internships with organizations of an entrepreneurial mindset, in particular, opportunities in business, sales or leadership with small- to medium-sized companies. 

The internship must be completed with a small- to medium-sized entrepreneurial organization, specifically in the realms of business, sales or leadership.

Boswell Family Experiential Learning Grant

The Boswell Family Experiential Learning Grant supports outstanding students in the pursuit of hands-on experiences that will contribute to their overall professional development and understanding of the corporate / business world. Award recipients may pursue developmental experiences such as professional internships or high-impact certification programs that deliver tangible career development through leaders in the field.

The internship should be focused in fields such as investment banking, investment management, private equity, venture capital, entrepreneurship, management consulting, accounting, corporate finance and / or operations, or another similarly tangible business application. High-impact certification programs that deliver tangible career development through leaders in the field are also eligible.

Boyd Family Internship Grant

Established by Maurya MacNeil Boyd, Class of 1987, and Bob Boyd, Class of 1988, the Boyd Family Internship Grant assists students who are participating in unpaid or low-paying internships with a focus on education, public service or civic engagement.

Butner Family Internship Fund

Established by Blain Butner, Class of 1975, and Peggy Butner, this fund supports meaningful internships for Davidson College students across a broad scope of industries, to enable students to take advantage of internships that otherwise provide no funding or minimal funding. Preference for funding will be for internships that support the students’ career and professional goals.

Carolyn and George Cretekos '69 Public Service Internship

Established by Carolyn Cretekos and George Cretekos, Class of 1969, this fund provides support for internship experiences for students interested in local, regional, state, or federal civil/government service.

Dr. Randy Nelson Summer Internship Grant

The Dr. Randy Nelson Summer Internship Grant was established by former students and friends of Dr. Randy Nelson to honor his significant contributions to the College, the internship fund supports Davidson students pursuing summer internships in the visual, literary and performing arts. 

Gerald Lee Wilson '58 and Virginia S. Wilson Internship Fund Grant

The Gerald Lee Wilson '58 and Virginia S. Wilson Internship Fund Grant supports students exhibiting financial need in their pursuit of internships that are consistent with their career interests. Priority is given to students demonstrating financial need.

Ginny Newell '78 Arts Fund

The Ginny Newell ‘78 Arts Fund enables students to broaden their horizons—both physically and intellectually—through summer internships in the study of and/or support of the visual arts, beyond the scope of North Carolina or their hometown.  

Hall Family Internship Grants

The Hall Family Internship Grants assist students who are participating in unpaid or low-paying internships with organizations of entrepreneurial mindsets or those that are focused on community and social service.  

Hasty/Smith Internship Grant

Established by Andrew Smith, Class of 1980, and Lisa Hasty, Class of 1981, this grant provides assistance for students pursuing internships or fellowships through the Matthews Center for Career Development.

Janet Burt Anderson First-generation Internship Fund

Established by Joseph and Nancy Craven, in memory of Nancy’s immigrant grandmother, and in recognition of the challenges that first-generation students face, this fund provides assistance for students who seek summer internships and are the first members of their families to attend a four-year college or university.

Juliana Tazewell Porter Memorial Internship Fund

The Juliana Tazewell Porter Memorial Internship Fund assists outstanding Davidson students, with priority given to student-athletes, pursuing summer internships in the medical or another healthcare-related field.

Layendecker Family Internship Fund

Established in honor of Katherine Layendecker, Class of 2015, the first graduate of the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program and recipient of the Sally G. McMillen Prize for her honors thesis, to honor and advance her passion for public service, social justice and human and civil rights, this fund provides financial assistance to students who are participating in unpaid or low-paying internships related to gender and sexuality issues or to help fund summer research in gender and sexuality issues.

Locke White Jr. Internship Fund

Established anonymously in memory of Professor Locke White Jr., Class of 1939, for student internships with a preference for students pursuing careers in science, technology, or medicine. 

MacDonald Family Internship Grant

The MacDonald Family Internship Grant supports students pursuing summer internships that are consistent with their career interests.

Summer research experiences do not qualify.

Morehead Family Internship Grant

Established by Cindy and Richard ‘Dick’ H. Morehead, Class of 1956, this fund supports high-impact summer internships in a broad scope of industries. 

Pioneer Internship Fund

This fund was established by women from the Class of 1977 (the first four-year class that included women at Davidson), and it was created in 2023 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of coeducation at Davidson.

This fund provides assistance for students with financial need who engage in internships, with a preference for those who seek internships in non-profit or governmental organizations.

The Cassell Family Socios En Salud / Partners in Health in Peru Internship

The Cassell Family Socios En Salud / Partners in Health in Peru Internship Fund, created by Ralph and Gail Cassell supports students each summer to work with Partners in Health in Lima, Peru. The internship goal is to provide an intensive civic-engagement and global health experience that seeks to develop citizens and innovators who can build effective responses to disease and poverty and learn about the health system and interventions in vulnerable populations. The fund provides $6,000 to cover the selected student’s round-trip travel and living expenses for a minimum of 10 weeks.

This internship grant is designated for students interning with Partners in Health in Lima, Peru.

Tom Anstrom Internship Fund 

Established in memory of Tom Anstrom ’04, The Tom Anstrom Internship Fund has been endowed by Tom’s classmates, friends, and family to honor and advance his passion for public service, social justice, and human and civil rights. Through his life and work in Washington, DC, and the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, Tom gained an appreciation for how progressive efforts in politics could make a positive difference. The Tom Anstrom Internship Fund Grant supports students pursuing internships in progressive public policy, politics, or social justice.

The internships must also meet the following requirements.

• Internships should be with government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), political offices or campaigns for candidates whose work and missions reflect progressive public policy and social justice.
• Work performed must be high quality with clearly defined roles and responsibilities, and supervised by a professional who provides regular feedback.
• The work should offer students the ability to complete 300 hours during the summer prior to the start of the next academic term.
• A cover letter needs to be submitted with application

Weeks Family Visual Arts Internship

Established by The Duke Endowment in gratitude for the service of K.D. Weeks, Jr. ‘69 on The Duke Endowment board, the Weeks Family Visual Arts Internship Fund provides funding for summer internship experiences for students interested in exploring careers in the visual arts.
