The Center for Civic Engagement hosts programs that introduce students to our community, pressing social issues, and the range of ways to be engaged with the community from short term direct service to immersive internships to social change leadership roles.
Student leaders plan service immersion experiences during fall and spring breaks (alternative breaks) that address a broad range of issues, including environmental conservation, homelessness, affordable housing, and education.
Community Involvement Fair
Civic Engagement hosts an annual Community Involvement Fair where students, faculty, and staff members explore the range of opportunities in our area and become familiar with the resources in our community related to social change issues. Past events have included more than 200 students interacting with over 45 nonprofit community partners. The Community Involvement Fair occurs at the start of each academic year.
Orientation Service Project
As part of new student orientation, all new students will take part in a series of small group projects that will support our local community, provide a fun way to get to know each other, highlight some of the community projects in which students and faculty are involved, and share details on how you can connect with the community during your time at Davidson. The Orientation Service Project will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2019.
The summer Service Odyssey is a student-led, immersive community service experience. Participants engage in a variety of service opportunities throughout the Davidson and the greater Charlotte area and learn about the range of social issues that impact these communities. In addition to participation in meaningful service, you will enjoy opportunities to critically reflect on your service work, explore local cultural attractions and develop lasting relationships with your peers.
Once a month, work with 8-10 fellow students on a service project with a local nonprofit organization. Each service project is student-led, and addresses a different social issue. After each service, you and your group members will discuss the experience over a meal.
