Tutoring is a great way to form strong bonds with students while helping lay the groundwork for their successful futures. 

Early literacy tutors are particularly in demand due to concerningly high levels of students reading below grade level in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. In addition to developing important basic literacy skills, tutors can help foster students’ self-confidence and love of reading and writing.  

About the Class

In the Bilingualism & Literacy (EDU 361) course taught by Prof. Rebeca Fernandez, Davidson students learn about best practices in teaching early literacy, especially when working with emergent bilingual children. Students are able to put theory into practice by tutoring with Augustine Literacy Project (ALP), thanks to the non-profit’s partnership with the class.

What is ALP?

Augustine Literacy Project–Charlotte (ALP) is a non-profit organization that provides free one-on-one literacy tutoring to K-2 students attending Title I schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg system who need extra support in reading, writing, and/or spelling. During the 2025-2026 school year, ALP served a record number of 879 students. ALP’s volunteer tutors are trained to deliver highly-structured, research-based literacy instruction to students. Tutors work with their tutees twice a week during the school day either in-person or remotely.

How to Get Involved

Take the course & tutor:

  • Enroll in the Bilingualism & Literacy (EDU 361) course, which is typically offered in the fall semester. As part of the class, you will receive ALP training and become a volunteer literacy tutor.
